MMA Fundamentals
The core class at Northstar, and where every member starts.
A Fundamentals session warms you up, then teaches one or two skills and drills them with a partner until they start to feel natural. Over the weeks that covers the whole of MMA: stance and footwork, punches, kicks, knees and elbows, defending strikes, the clinch, takedowns and stopping them, getting back to your feet, and controlling and finishing on the ground.
You train at a controlled pace. Nobody is trying to win the drill. Beginners and experienced students share the mat, and the coaches pair people sensibly.

MMA Sparring
Where the drills meet a resisting partner.
Sparring runs straight after Fundamentals on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. Coaches set the intensity and pair people by experience. The aim is to learn, not to hurt your partner. You'll need gloves, shin guards and a gum shield. Gloves and shin guards can be rented at the gym.
Sparring is optional. New members usually spend a few weeks in Fundamentals first. Read the beginner's guide for how to know when you're ready.

Private classes
A private class gives you a coach's full attention: a faster start before you join the group, extra work on a weak spot, or preparation for a goal of your own.
Private classes cost 1,500 THB an hour, and a friend can join you at no extra cost (two people maximum). Training regularly? A 10-session pack is 13,500 THB and lasts 3 months; a 20-session pack is 24,000 THB and lasts 6 months.
Send a message or an email with what you'd like to work on and the times that suit you.
Add BJJ to your week
Our sister gym, Gato Studio, teaches dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Chiang Mai, and the two gyms share coaches. If you want more time on the ground than MMA classes give you, add Gato's BJJ timetable to your week.
Questions
What is an MMA class?
An MMA class teaches the parts of mixed martial arts together: striking with hands, feet, knees and elbows; clinching and takedowns; and control and submissions on the ground. In Fundamentals you learn and drill those skills with a partner. In Sparring you use them in controlled rounds.
Which class should a beginner take?
MMA Fundamentals. It runs four times a week and assumes no experience. Join Sparring later, when you and the coaches agree you're ready.
